How to choose the best generator for my needs?

How to choose the best generator for my needs?

Step 1: Put together a list of the devices that you need to power up.

Your list may include the below products.

- Fridge (approximately 600-1200W)

- Lights (approximately 50-200W per unit)

- Laptop (approximately 50-100W)

- Smartphone chargers (approximately 5-20W)

- Small appliances like TV You might want to refer to our blog post which lists a large range of devices and their associated running wattage.

Step 2: Calculate your total power requirements

Add up your devices' running and startup wattages.

Some like tools or fridge, need an initial burst of power to start up (surge watts).

We recommend you choose a generator whose output is a little higher than your total to leave some room for startup surges.

Step 3: Look at your required usage and mobility

- Portable short-term usage: In case of occasional camping or light backup uses, a portable lithium battery or a small inverter generator (1000-2000W) would be helpful.

- Heavy or extended power requirement: For home backup or running multiple appliances, we would recommend you to purchase a mid-size generator (3000-6000W).

- Whole-house or heavy-duty backup: For large homes or multiple appliances running at the same time, a heavy-duty generator (7000W and above) would be the best options.

Step 4: What size do I need?

- Low Power requirements (to charge phones or small lights): Go for a small lithium battery or a small-sized inverter generator (1000-2000W).

- Medium Power requirements (for a fridge, TV, or lights): Go for a 2000-4000W generator.

- Heavy Power requirements (for a sump pump or multiple appliances): Go for a 5000W or bigger generator.

Our tips:

 - If you remain unsure, opt for a generator with a higher capacity, 20 tp 30% than what you have calculated

- Make sure you check the startup surge wattage for each of your appliances

- Keep in mind portability. The smaller the easier to move around, the bigger the heaviest and more powerful they are.
