Solar Panels - Troubleshooting tips
Share
Solar blankets provide a portable power solution, but they can occasionally experience issues.
This guide will help you identify and resolve common problems to ensure optimal performance.
1. My solar panel is not charging devices or battery
Possible Causes & Solutions:
Insufficient sunlight
- Ensure the panel is getting direct sunlight, not shaded or obstructed.
- Adjust the panel position and angle for maximum exposure.
- Avoid using the device during low-light conditions like early morning or late afternoon.
Dirty or damaged panels
- Wipe the panel surface with a soft cloth and mild detergent to remove dirt, dust, or debris.
- Check for cracks or damage that may affect performance.
Faulty connections
- Check all cables and connectors for secure and correct connections.
- Ensure MC4 connectors or adapter plugs are properly fully connected.
- If using a solar charge controller, verify that the wiring is correctly connected.
Battery or device compatibility
- Ensure the output voltage and current match the battery or device requirements.
- Use a power bank to initiate charging, especially when starting with low current.
Overheating or excessive heat
- Move the panel to a well-ventilated area to avoid overheating.
- Regular maintenance helps in maintaining performance and longevity.
2. I experience slow or intermittent charging
Possible Causes & Solutions:
Overcast or cloudy weather
- Solar output decreases during low light.
- Consider adding a larger panel or an alternative power source.
Poor connections
- Inspect wires and connectors for looseness or corrosion and clean as necessary.
Controller issues
- Check controllers for error indicators or setup.
- Ensure battery and panel compatibility, especially concerning voltage.
Battery Issues
- Ensure the battery is not completely discharged or damaged.
- Test with another battery to determine if the issue remains.
3. My solar blanket is overheating or warping
Possible Causes & Solutions:
Prolonged use in high heat
- Use of a panel in high-temperature conditions can lead to degradation.
- Ensure proper ventilation by allowing air movement underneath the panel.
Poor ventilation
- Avoid placing the panel on hot surfaces such as car roofs or asphalt, and provide airflow.
4. My solar blanket is not recognised by power station or charge controller
Possible Causes & Solutions:
Voltage mismatch
- Check that the solar panel’s voltage and power rating match what your power station can handle.
Incorrect adapter or cable
- Some power stations need certain types of connectors like DC, Anderson, or MC4.
Use the right one.
Overload protection activated
Unplug the panel, wait 5 minutes, and plug it back in to reset the protection.
5. My solar blanket stopped working suddenly
Possible Causes & Solutions:
Overvoltage
- Some solar panels have safety features that turn them off if there’s too much power.
- Take the panel out, let it cool down, and try again.
Damaged solar cells
- Look for broken glass or loose wires. If the panel is damaged, you might need to replace it.
